The story of the New Year's piglet advocates empathy, solidarity and friendship. The charm of the story lies in its traditional narrative elements (farm animals as characters, repetition of situations and dialogues and empowering happy ending) and in the simplicity of its ethical message—resistance against fear, exploitation and violence. Small and intimate, but at the same time grotesque in its drawing, the book raises questions about the appropriate alternative content for youngsters, concerning its almost controversial content.
